It's Been Two Years...

Hi everyone,
It seems that Xanga has changed dramatically since I last wrote an entry.

Xanga, to its credit, has remained a constant force in my life since I was 14. Looking back at entries, I went through my little dramas in high school, the most significant of which being what I now call my "identity crisis," or for those of you that knew me at the time, my COMPLETE transformation from a dorky little white girl to a totally Asian-washed gangster wannabe girl.

There were a lot of memories I'd like to forget.

But, I can appreciate Xanga's dramatic change. Recently, I read a weblog from my dear old friend Janet Panen (hi Janet I love you!), and she had written something after a very long Xanga hiatus. Mostly it was about her troubles with parents and normal insecurities that everyone goes through as they start out in college.

Reading it showed me, to my great delight, the lovely Janet has remained the same, although undeniably she is growing into a woman by learning and maturing from her life experiences.

Pride doesn't begin to describe how I feel where I've come since college.

I don't recieve any financial help from my parents, subsequently paying for my apartment in San Francisco and living expenses completely on my own.
I have an amazing group of friends who hail from all parts of the world and all walks of life and we just happened to come togther with a mutual understanding of how precious friendship and love are, considering we have all ripped out our roots every 4 years or so.
I am also in (cue gagging) a happy and healthy relationship. Actually, I'm a princess, and he's smart enough to treat me as such.
I have graduated from school and hold a degree in the Culinary Arts and currently work as a chef in an (Asian!!) restaurant.

There are still moments where I panic, and avoid responsibility.

I won't go through it in this blog, but I am fully aware of how quickly things can fall apart and I could fall deep into a black hole...I know this because I have been there.

But....I'm strong and happy, and I hope all you guys are doing fine like me. My love to everyone that reads this and remembers me from times long past...All the best guys!!

I'll continue to update...I'm kind of feeling the xanga throwback.

Bye lovers -

I just returned from spending five days in Washington D.C. for my brother's college (Georgetown) graduation.

I'm at work again and more than a little jetlagged. Maybe I'll have some pictures later.

My brother graduated with a Bachelor in Economics and is moving to New York City to become an investment banker. In four years or so, he might return to school to get a Master's in business. I am very, very proud of him. He has worked hard in school all his life, and for that, he deserves the millions he's about to make.

When most people think of Washington D.C., they think of historical monuments, the white house, etc. But all those things aside, is is a beautiful city. And I mean beautiful. It's probably the closest thing in America to what a European city looks like - no sky scrapers marring the beauty of the old historical buildings.

But.

I hate the people. With a passion. These Republican W.A.S.P.S care for nothing more than their pressed Ralph Lauren skirts and little blouses and little purses, and I couldn't stand them! I had to deal with this crowd for five days straight, and for my brother's sake only, I stuck through it all.

Case Example: The minute we arrived at the front entrance of Georgetown University, fresh off a red eye flight, tired, dirty, and more than a little grumpy, I noticed this very prim woman in her twenties walking by me and staring at me for all she was worth.

Now, as much as I like to kick it with asians in their little gangster circles, I looked perfectly respectable. I was wearing a puffy fur jacket and some torn jeans and my stunner shades, smacking on gum, but I'd practically just  stepped off the plane for crying out loud. And she stared at me so intently, like I was a cockroach that just crawled out of the sewer. She walked by me, staring for at least a full 30 seconds, and I wanted nothing more in the world than to say (in front of my family nonetheless):

"What, bitch? You like me or something? What the fuck are you staring at?"

Which is exactly what my very gangster asian boyfriend would have said, and that I-don't-give-a-fuck attitude has heavily rubbed off on my, but once again, for my brother's sake (because this is the crowd he runs with), I bit back my tongue.

Just for the record, the very fancy schmancy Senior Ball where tickets are $80 bucks a pop and I wore this dress -

In plum, though.
 - I looked better than half of the girls there and I got happily tipsy at the very fancy open bars where they thought I was another graduating senior and gave me one Cosmopolitan and two Vodka Grapefruits. Champagne would have been better though.

Anyway....

The highlight of the trip was the dinner my mom, brother, sister and I had on the eve of his graduation at the supremely expensive three star restaurant, 1789.

We ate in this room:

A five-course dinner for four with wine costs $417. Plus tip. But since we were staying in the dorms and not an expensive hotel, and since it was my brother's college graduation, and we normally never eat at places such as this, my mother was happy to pay.

What was this five course dinner? As a budding chef, I will tell you it is exactly what I aspire to cook myself one day. Small, exquisitely prepared heapings of expensive food that is beyond delicious. I can't remember the wines paired with each dish (they would give my mother and brother a different glass of something every time we received a new dish), but I can remember what we ate. Prepare to salivate.

First Course: Crab Salad with Avocado Puree, Caviar, and Cucumbers.

Second Course: Roasted Scallops with Green Onion and Clams.

Third Course: Pancetta Crusted Lamb with Olive Jus and something else, but I forget what.

Fourth Course: Vermont Shepherd Cheese with Bread slices and some kind of Chutney.

Fifth Course: Chocolate Dome with Gold on it and Coffee Ice Cream.

Finished off with a cappuccino. Oh, food, the love of my life.

Okay, I have been writing way too much. I hope you all enjoyed this small glimpse into the privileged world of Republican assholes.

Till later -

I felt that a new layout for a new beginning was in order.

I'm at work (I work at a smoothie bar for those of you that don't know), and a customer just walked in asking for a smoothie with passion fruit. As I was making it for him, he was telling me about how he used live in Ecuador and he and his friends would pick passion fruit right off the trees and blend them into smoothies all the time.

Is it just me, or does South America seem to be the new "it" place? With the onslaught of all these gorgeous Brazilian models (why are they always from Brazil???) on the Victoria's Secret runway and elsewhere, the new Acai berry phenomenon (Oprah Winfrey called it an anti-aging superfood, it is higher in antioxidants than blueberries and Brazilians have been eating it for centuries), and Chile and Peru suddenly popular exotic destinations for vacation getaways, it seems to me that South America is the place to be right now. Or has it always been like that and I've just missed the trend?

In any case, I've always had a fascination for Argentina. I've heard it's beautiful there, although hopelessly politically corrupt. But then, all the beautiful countries on the planet are politically corrupt. It's where the tango originated, and I've always thought the tango was one of the most beautiful, graceful, and sexy dances of all time. It's like ballet and the waltz mixed together with a little seduction and love-making thrown in. Note in my example:

The embedding was disabled, so I'll just put up the link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gEe2j43X-Ms

Beautiful. Worth watching.

Today must be the workout day for everyone; I've been making wheatgrass shots all day. Well, it's time for my onion soup dinner yay!
